What is IPv6? Originally, IP addresses were designed as a 32-bit number and this system, known as Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4), is still used today. However, due to the massive growth of the Internet and the impending exhaustion of these addresses, a new addressing system (IPv6), using 128 bits for the address, was developed and standardized by RFC 2460 in 1998.
Originally, Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) was designed as a 32-bit number. IPv4 is still in use today for Internet addressing and routing. To accommodate the explosive growth of Internet users, cloud-based applications, and Internet of things (IoT) enabled objects connecting to the Internet daily, the newer IPv6 addressing system creates more addresses by using 128 bits for the address.
Neustar Free IPv6 Tools, in addition to our Free IPv4 Tools, provide a range of DNS administrator tools to help you perform migration tasks from IPv4 to IPv6 and proactively manage your IPv6 address space.
